Here at Tree Sparks, we are lucky to have a great team of people working hard to achieve our vision and spread the word about forestry and environmental careers - and they are such a nice bunch that we want you to get to know them! This week, we’re hearing from Georgia, our Project Manager.
Greetings all, my name is Georgia Parker. I am currently in my second year of university studying Woodland Ecology and Conservation at the University of Cumbria. I have always had a love for trees from a very young age, being in their presence brings about a sense of joy and fascination. I started my higher education journey studying Creative Media in Manchester, my home town. This did not resonate with my connection to the outside world so when I learnt by chance that I could pursue a degree involving trees and sustainable forestry practices, I was thrilled! To be able to learn about the environment around me with like minded peers and knowledgeable lecturers is truly fulfilling. I have just returned from a reciprocal exchange to California! It was amazing to learn about the forests of America whilst living amongst the redwoods, some of the biggest trees in the world.
I am really looking forward to playing a part in the Tree Sparks project. I am utterly passionate about connecting people with trees, from personal observation I find there is a huge disassociation between the youth of today and nature. This disconnection along with the rise of technology has, in my eyes led to the huge increase in mental health issues in recent generations. Through conversing with others and through my own experience of being completely unaware of degrees and careers in forestry, it seems these opportunities are not spoken about in the dominating mainstream education system. I want to play a part in raising awareness and instigating conversation about trees and forestry, there is such a misconception about the practice of forestry and this needs to change. With the drastic effects of climate change around the corner and deforestation occurring all around the world, it has never been so important to educate and encourage people to get involved with forestry. To work with the environment instead of against it and heal our forests from the impact our ancestors and selves have had on the land. Tree sparks calls to my passionate beliefs of rewilding the human spirit and inspiring youth to pursue a career and life path within the forestry and environmental sector. I am super excited to be a part of this project, we need to educate the youth to be environmentally conscious in order to battle the issues we are faced with and once again rekindle the connection to our earth.
